Luther Van Dross-Dance With My Father Again
Back when I was a child, before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around ’til I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved
If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way, I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me
Then finally make me do just what my mama said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me
If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me
I know I’m praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved
I know you don’t do it usually
But dear Lord she’s dying
To dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream”

Vampire Detox

Demi Moore may have punk’d us when she claimed blood-detox by leeches is the secret behind her youthful appearance. But the very same bloodsuckers used from Hippocrates’ time actually do have modern uses; mainly, in surgery. Some doctors use leeches rather than a post-surgical drain to suck out blood from a wound or graft. The powerful blood thinner in leech saliva improves both cosmetic outcome and cuts down chance of infection.

Preparation H cream is marketed to treat hemorrhoids, but beauty queens have long used a tiny dab under the eyes to reduce bags and dark circles after a long night. One ingredient in Preparation H is shark liver oil, a folk remedy for skin conditions. In Canada, the cream is formulated with BioDyne, a yeast derivative thought to smooth wrinkles. However, the maker of Preparation H, states that the product is not to be applied on the face.

Baby Face
What could be more powerful than the placental protein that surrounds growing babies in the womb? Placental protein is high in antioxidants, amino acids and nutrients, making it a rejuvenating ingredient in facial creams reportedly used by ever-youthful Hollywood stars. It’s known to be effective in eliminating wrinkles and improving skin texture. If putting placenta on your face doesn’t freak you out too much, consider popping placenta pills — a remedy for fending off the baby blues.

Toxic Beauty

Who knew food poisoning could be sexy? Botox, Hollywood’s must-do skin tightening injection, is derived from Botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin produced by the same bacteria that causes botulism. Need another reason to be ambivalent about this face-lifting wonder? New research points to evidence that Botox may make a beeline from the injection site to the brain. The bottom line? Botox may affect what’s going on upstairs, which is nothing to smile about.

Snake Charming

Afraid of needles, but desperate for the results of Botox? How about applying a little snake venom instead? Gwyneth Paltrow brought attention to a venom-like synthetic ingredient called Syn-Ake, a key element in her UltraLuxe 9 facial cream, which claims to de-wrinkle skin by relaxing facial muscles. The cream costs nearly $185 an ounce, so you may want to opt for a cheaper alternative, but don’t think of inducing a viper at the zoo to inject your cheeks free of charge.

Frog Face

Kissing a bullfrog may not get you a fairy prince, but it may leave some anti-oxidant rich extract on your face. Scientists have recently discovered a peptide in the skin and muscles of bullfrogs that reduces the appearance of wrinkles on human skin. Expect to see new skin creams with this magical bullfrog extract soon. But it gets better. Since the extract is water-soluble, it can be added to a variety of products, perhaps even future beauty drinks. Cheers to that!

Fant-ass-tic Skin

Donkeys have served as beasts of burden for centuries, but they have never been known as a means of skin restoration — until now. After a 116-year-old Ecuadorian woman attributed her long life to drinking donkey milk, women flocked to purchase skin care products that included it as a key ingredient. Donkey milk is said to be extremely effective as a moisturizer and has numerous regenerative properties that may reduce signs of aging.

Sticker Shock

Maybe you wouldn’t have so many wrinkles if you didn’t move your face. Ever. One brand of sticky facial pads called Frownies, which are made from natural materials, make this solution a reality. Frownies pull skin flat while you sleep, which is said to correct the deep lines formed as a result of repetitive facial movement, like furrowing your brows. Applied directly to the wrinkle, Frownies are said to produce results in up to 3 weeks. Plus, you’re allowed to smile during the day.

Pretty in Pink

Although you may acquaint it with a bad case of the runs, Pepto-Bismol works double duty as a facial mask. Thrifty women looking for the benefits of a spa facial, apply the chalky pink substance to their face and let its salicylic acid, a great facial peel, do its duty. Some believe that Pepto may be even milder and gentler than most commercial salicylic products because the same ingredients that coats your tummy also coats the face.

(Castor) Oily Hair

If your hair is lacking moisture, castor oil can dampen your locks and amp up the shine. Catherine Zeta-Jones attributes her shiny mane to castor oil, which can be added to conditioner in the shower or brushed through wet hair. The smell of castor oil isn’t pleasant, but it does keep hair lustrous and healthy, which makes the smelly sacrifice worthwhile to many women.

From lipstick to lip balm, beauty products up-and-down the beauty aisle claim to defend against wind and chapping, sunburn and aging. But which ingredients offer optimal protection? Do any have adverse effects, such as actually causing dryness or skin irritation or exposing you to toxins? Plus, are any addictive? We asked Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, MD, a Board Certified Dermatologist and Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), these and other burning questions about lip protection.

In 2007 the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics released a report that found lead in half of the 33 brand-name lipsticks they tested. Although the FDA has no standards for regulating cosmetics and the tested lead-levels would not pose a health threat for most, the authors of the report advise that pregnant women and small children avoid using lipstick because lead exposure can disrupt normal development. Even low levels of lead can add up, since lead is also commonly found in paint and drinking water.

At the Store: Among the top brands testing positive for lead were L’Oreal’s Colour Riche “True Red” and “Classic Wine,” Cover Girl’s Incredifull Lipcolor “Maximum Red,” and Dior’s Addict “Positive Red.”

Say Goodbye to Dry

To prevent dry, chapped lips, look for moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin, beeswax, natural oils or petrolatum. Choose lip balms that are ointment formulations containing very few ingredients, ideally less than five. One pick that meets these criteria is Vaseline’s Lip Therapy Petroleum Jelly Advanced Formula, which contains only one ingredient: petrolatum. Petrolatum is the “gold standard” for moisturizing both the skin and lips says Dr. Badreshia-Bansal. Depending on the severity of dryness, she recommends frequent applications throughout the day which could mean up to at least four-six times a day for severely dry lips.

Irritating Ingredients

Some chemicals found in lip balms can actually irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions. If you keep buying lip balms that leave you with dry, itchy or red lips, try avoiding parabens, fragrance, glycolic or salicylic acid, oil of cloves (contains eugenol) and lanolin. Menthol and camphor can cause a tingling sensation, that could also be an irritant, but the effect is not drying.

At the Store: Some products that contain these culprit ingredients include Natural Ice Medicated Lip Protectant, Blistex’s Herbal Answer, and Banana Boat’s Aloe Vera with Vitamin E.

Are Lip Care Products Addictive?

You may feel addicted to lip balms or moisturizers because you’ve become so used to the feeling of well-moisturized, soft, supple, and non-irritated lips, but there is no research to prove that any ingredient in lip balms is addictive, says Dr. Badreshia-Bansal.

Understanding Sun Protection Factor

You want to make sure that your lip product with sunscreen has a “Sun Protection Factor” or SPF of at least 15, and blocks both UVA and UVB rays, recommends the AAD. While excessive exposure to both kinds of rays can lead to skin cancer, UVA rays are associated with premature aging of the skin and UVB rays are responsible for sunburns. When it comes to SPF, higher isn’t always that much better. For example, SPF 30 screens 97 percent of UVB rays, while an SPF of 15 screens 93 percent of UVB rays, according to the AAD.

Best Anti-Aging Measures

Keep your lips as hydrated as possible to hide lines and wrinkles, says Dr. Badreshia-Bansal. Regular use of products with sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is the most important step in preventing future sun damage and skin cancers. Also, lip treatments that contain retinol, glycolic acids, and/or antioxidants may be helpful, but be cautious as retinols and acids may also irritate the skin, so always moisturize frequently.

Be Ingredient Savvy

Remember, that when you’re reading an ingredient list, those at the top are found in the product in the highest quantity and those at the bottom are the smallest amounts.
